Mariana Gonzalez-Walker started as an EMT with Bell Ambulance in July 2022. Mariana works full-time on nights from our busiest station. As an EMT, Mariana frequently responds to various calls while on shift, always showing kindness and treating patients in the best way possible.
On April 26th, 2024, during a recent heavy rainfall, our dispatch center received a call stating someone who had “fallen into the sewer.” Mariana and her partner were first to arrive on the scene. Upon arrival, they encountered a patient who had fallen into a storm drain and was in danger of being swept away by the current of the swift-moving water. Mariana and her partner recognized the need for additional resources and notified the dispatchers that the Milwaukee Fire Department would be needed. Without hesitation, and with just her and her partner on scene, they jumped into action to ensure they secured the patient until the fire department arrived and assisted in pulling the patient to safety.
Due to their quick thinking and actions, they ensured a safe ending to a potentially tragic situation. A fellow coworker wrote, “Had it not been for the crew’s courageous action and quick thinking, the patient could have had a very different outcome. They were true heroes for this patient”. Because of her thinking, actions, and efforts, Mariana Gonzalez-Walker has been nominated to be a 2024 PAAW Star of Life.
Congratulations from the Professional Ambulance Association of Wisconsin on receiving the 2024 WI Star of Life Award!
